Revealed: The Latest Batch of Banned 24-Reg Number Plates

We may be fashionably late to the party, but who said laughter has an expiration date?

With the first 24-reg plates rolling out back in March, we're a tad behind on the joke, but better late than never, right? Let's dive into the latest batch of banned number plates for 2024 and uncover the gems (or rather, the faux pas) that have been deemed too risqué for the roads.

Twice a year, the DVLA releases a new set of combinations for number plates, marking the arrival of fresh vehicles on the roads. But alongside the eagerly awaited plates are those that will never grace our highways—banned for being too risqué or downright inappropriate.

In a recent revelation, Carwow's Freedom of Information request to the DVLA has uncovered a trove of prohibited 24 number plates. From eyebrow-raising combinations to those where the number 4 suspiciously resembles the letter "A," the list offers a glimpse into the colourful world of banned plates.

Here are some of the standout entries from this year's list:

C24 ASH
TE24 ROR
**24 RSE
*D24 UNK
SL24 GGS
The letter W was banned immediately before **24 NKR
**24 NAL
*F24 RTS
BB24 STD
NO24 RUS
EU24 WAR
FK24 RUS

Is your number plate legal? Here are the rules you should be aware of:

  • Plates must be made from a reflective material.
  • Characters on the front plate must be black on a white background, while those on the rear plate must be black on a yellow background.
  • Plates should not have a background pattern.
  • They must be marked to show who supplied the plate and bear the British Standard number "BS AU 145e" for plates fitted after September 1, 2021.
  • Characters must not be removable or reflective, and if fitted after September 1, 2021, they must be a single shade of black.
  • Number plates can have 3D (raised) characters and display certain flags, symbols, and identifiers. Additionally, zero-emission vehicles can display a green flash.

Whether you're a car enthusiast or simply curious, the world of banned number plates never fails to entertain. So, take a moment to chuckle at the creativity (or lack thereof) behind these prohibited plates, but remember to ensure your own number plate abides by the rules.

And with that, happy motoring!
